Posted 05/01/2008 04:42:37 PM | | I'm reading "Soldier of Southwestern Virginia", which is a collection of letters from a SW Va. cavalryman to his sweetheart. He mentions that in trying to uniform his militia company in early 1861 there was much difficulty in obtaining "good" cloth from Richmond, and they would have to settle for "Thomas Jeans" and "it would perhaps be better than anything else for service".
From that descrïption, I'm assuming that it was a cheap, but tough kind of cloth, jeans cloth perhaps.
Googling has been unsuccessful, so does anyone have any information or links for "Thomas Jeans" I could sink my teeth into?
